Bruce Lee does an special chapter for the backfist in one of his books, basic training, because of the snap it generates becomes a good weapon, and i have used effectively several times, it works well with the philly shell defense.

Great post! Having studied Karate originally i see the value in the backfist. There are many that dont and these are usually the martial artists that wear gloves. As i feel strongly about the backfist's potential i wrote an article about it on my website, which you may find interesting.

I have used the backfist off the hook quite a bit in sparring. It works well against people who lean back, or move back to get outside a hook, and then come back in. In serious situation i would strike with the bottom, or hammer fist and aim for the neck or temple. I study FMA, but this is something i stumbled on in training, not that i remember being taught (although 25 years of intermittent head shots may have caused memory problems), however, it works vicously well knife sparring with icepick grip...Lew Cottell
